Begin Readings for Lesson 4  Using the Discussion Question Threads, students will respond to writing prompts which are statements that focus on a topic or an issue, followed by questions. The purpose of an essay prompt is to inspire a response in the form of an essay, which will test your writing, reasoning, and analytical skills these will follow the reading assignments for each unit.  Persuasive Prompts  The purpose of persuasive writing is to convince the reader that a point of view is valid and/or that the reader should take a specific action. It is important in persuasive writing to address the potential concerns and questions of the audience as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the “other” side. These should be approached in a way that ultimately supports the student’s own position.  For persuasive prompts use the cue words convince, persuade, and why. Persuasive prompts should avoid the word how because it tends to elicit narrative, descriptive, or expository writing.     How to write a Persuasive prompt:     1.Look for the words “convince, persuade, and why” in the writing prompt for a persuasive prompt. 2.Brainstorm about what the prompt is asking you to write about. 3.Create a thesis statement. … 4.Think of strong topic sentences that support your thesis statement. 5.Compose the introduction for your essay. 6.Write the body of the essay. 7.Add your conclusion.  Responses should be written in 4-5 paragraph (minimum) form. If any sources other than the textbook for the course are used, they need to be cited in APA format. For quotes and paraphrased material from our textbook, simply include the parenthetical citation with the author and the applicable page number.  Every students posting is going to be different.
